Kansas City rhymer, Doctor Okeh , and Kansas City hip hop producer, Chop Logik, recently teamed up to drop Okeh’s newest, the Purple Heart EP. While I’m more familiar with Chop Logik‘s beats than I am with Doctor Okeh as an MC, there’s a very classic sound to this record on both the lyrical and instrumental fronts. Okeh sounds a bit like a cross between El-P and KC’s own, Vertigone (Okeh’s verses are brimming with quotables and content, nearly masked by his agile flows). Chop Logik’s dark, scratch-heavy instrumentals fit Doctor Okeh like a glove. The pair most recently performed before Evolve and the Deep Thinkers at the Riot Room in Kansas City just a couple of months ago. There’s no fluff on this EP. Purple Heart is a very serious hip hop record. What’s even more serious? Not quite halfway through 2014, this is one of the most authentic hip hop records I’ve heard out of KC’s vast talent pool this year. Seriously. -Chris Mills, Demencha Magazine 2014
